Statement on the Ethiopian Civil Conflict

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia —

Our Secretariat is actively monitoring and evaluating the evolving security situation in Ethiopia. While there have been reports of conflict and instability, much of the ongoing conflict has been concentrated in northern Ethiopia, particularly in areas near the Ethiopian-Eritrean border, including parts of Tigray, Afar, and Wollo. These regions are geographically distant from Addis Ababa, where the conference is scheduled to take place.

Based on our current assessments, informed by reporting from the U.S. Department of State and International SOS (ISOS), Yale University's travel security advisory partner, Addis Ababa remains comparatively stable. Nevertheless, we recognize that the security situation can evolve, and we are committed to continuously reassessing conditions as the conference approaches.

Regarding contingency planning, the safety of our delegates remains our foremost priority. Should the security situation deteriorate to a point where hosting the conference in Addis Ababa would pose unacceptable risks, we have contingency plans to explore relocating the conference to an alternative host city, such as Nairobi, Kenya, subject to logistical feasibility and further security assessments.

We want to emphasize that we will not proceed with hosting the conference in Addis Ababa if conditions are deemed unsafe for our delegates. We will continue to communicate any significant developments or changes to our plans with participating institutions in a timely and transparent manner.
